CHAPTER FIVE.
"So Khushi, you said you were looking for a job?" Julia opened a packet of chips, they just bought.
"yeah, I badly need a job. Our living conditions aren't that good. But, damn! Not a single job Jules. This is sick!" Khushi munched on her now favourite chips, two at a time.
Khushi asked Julia, if she could call her Jules, to which Julia happily agreed. It felt more friendly, more .. family?
Her mom used to call her Jules, before she was snatched away from her. From her life.
Julia, lived with her father and her step mother. A step mother, who never really loved her. If she ever talked to her, it was only because of her dad. Though her dad loved her to bits. Her every wish, every desire was fulfilled even before she could ask for it. Which irked her step mother more! A LOT.
Julia was tired of her step mother's wicked plans to always bring her down in front of her dad. But her bond with her dad, was much stronger then her mother's hatred towards her. She didn't care about any of her stupid plans or the way she treated her, because she had her father with her. His love, his support, was all she needed.
Julia felt very lonely after her 'real' mother's death. So to help her daughter out, her dad thought the best thing would be to get married again. But little did he know, his decision to bring Julia a new mother would not give her a least bit of help but bring more pain and miseries into her life.
Julia sighed as evil memories of her past hit her heart.
"Jules? are you okay?" Khushi patted Julia's shoulder. "You look lost?" concern dripping from her tone.
"Huh? yeah. Uh, nothing much. The way you called me Jules reminded me of my mother." Julia's voice barely audibly, her eyes getting moist.
Julia's pain brought tears to Khushi's eyes. She could feel her pain! why wouldn't she? She herself was an orphan.
Without another thought, Khushi wrapped her arms around Julia, gathering her into a bone-cracking hug, wishing she could squeeze all the bitter memories out of her head! Julia hugged her back instantly. Sobbing on Khushi's shoulder.
"Shh now. Don't cry please? Your mom wouldn't want to see you crying like this. Everything will be okay!" Khushi's own tears started to roll out of her eyes. Her heart constricted with love and sympathy for this girl sitting right next to her.
"Jules?"
"I'm sorry. Its just .. I miss her so much."
"You know Jules, you miss people who are not with you. But your mother is right here. Watching you. See that star?" Khushi pointed towards the sky.
"Thats your mom. And the one right next to it? thats my mother. They never really left us Jules. They are always here for us. Watching us. Guiding us. Loving us." Khushi said, smiling at the stars.
"Our mothers." Julia's eyes shone with hope.
Now she didn't feel so lonely. She knew her mom was with her everytime and now she also had Khushi. She couldn't believe that, in such a short span of time Khushi became her best friend. Or she thought she was.
"Okay. Enough of the emotional crap now. All this crying has made me hungry. Reeeaalllyyyy hungryy." Khushi said, running her hands over her stomach.
"What?! But you just had three packet of chips right now. You are still hungry?"
"Yeah, so? Don't forget we shared them. Equal. 50-50." Khushi smacked her arm.
"Right! As if you ever let me have more then two chips." Julia rolled her eyes grinning. Khushi's mouth formed a perfect 'O'. Her eyes wide.
"I GAVE YOU FOUR CHIPS FROM THE LAST PACKET WE HAD! HOW COULD YOU?!"
"Yeah yeah. whatever." Julia smirked, pulling Khushi's hand to make her stand.
"We should head home Khush, its dark now."
"Yeah, lets go."
"Taxi!" Khushi shouted.
....
"Thanks Jules. Today was so much fun. When are we meeting again?"
"Tomorrow of course. After my work hours. When will you be free?"
"Anytime. Im jobless remember?"
"Oh yeah. About your job. May be I can help. Email me, every single detail about your qualification, your degrees and all. I'll see what I can do."
"Thanks Jules. See you tomorrow." Khushi said, hugging her good bye.
"Bye. Take care." Julia smiled, turning to sit back into the cab.
*----*----*----*
*Next morning*
"Khushii? Wake up, lazy head! Your phone is ringing since the past two hours. Pick it up or silence it." Shilpa bua, shook khushi's shoulder.
"Yes buaa" Khushi yawned.
"Uh, hello?" Khushi finally answered her phone, her eyes still closed, the yawns never leaving her mouth.
"Still sleeping, huh?"
"Oh. Heeyyy Jules. Sup?"
"Hey. I've got good news for you Khush."
Khushi could sense Julia's ear to ear grin from the phone.
"Really? what? your dad kicked your step mother out of your house?" Khushi smirked, getting up to sit straight in the bed. Stretching her body from head to toe.
"Not reaallyy. Something much better" Julia couldn't hold her excitement.
"What could be better then that, huh?" Khushi washed her face, getting ready for the hell of a day she had to go through now.
"I've found you a job." Julia was literally shouting, out of excitement.
"Woah Jules. Relax. Thats cool ... WAIT? WHAT?! A JOB? YOU FOUND ME A JOB? HOW? WHERE? WHEN?"
"HAHA. Yeah! Meet me ASAP. I'll tell you everything!"
"Oh SHIT. Are you serious? crap. Where to meet?"
"Meet me at xxxx"
"Okay, boss. Will be right there."
"Haha, okay. bye."
"Hey jules?"
"Yeah?"
"I LOOOVE YOOOU SO FRICKIN' MUCH!" Khushi was too happy and too excited to think straight. She nearly tumbled when Julia told her about the job.
"Haha, Love you more, Khush. See you."
"BUAAAA. I'VE GOT A GOOD NEWS!"
*----*----*----*
"AR fashion house? Whats that?" Khushi took a sip of her coffee.
"Its all about fashion designing. Going through the details you sent me, last night I think this job would be good for you. You should take your chance. I have a friend working there, Lavanya. I talked to her about you and she has asked me to send you there. She said, no interviews are taken without appointments. But her boss is very nice. She said, she will convince him for your interview."
"Ahan, and when to go there?" Khushi asked.
"Um, 4 in the evening, Lavanya said."
"Oh. Okay. You'll come with me right?" Khushi was really nervous, with this new job thing.
'What if they reject me? No no. Be positive Khushi. Julia said, the boss was nice. Don't lose hope.'
As if reading her mind, Julia said "Relax Khush. You'll definitely get this job. Just be confident. Trust me."
"Be confident. Right. I can do it!" Khushi took a deep breathe, getting up to go.
"I'll wait for you, outside your house at 3:30. Be ready." Julia smiled at Khushi, getting up with her.
"Okay boss." Khushi grabbed the left over cookie from her plate while Julia picked her cup of coffee, making their way out.
*----*----*----*
This day had been, one of the best days of Khushi's life. Her interview had been a success. She was employed in the accounts and finance sector, considering that she was really good at mathematics and accounts. Her salary was more then she could even imagine. She was asked to start from the very next day of her interview.
She couldn't thank Julia enough! If she wouldn't have been there, Khushi would have never got this job.
Khushi took Julia to her place. She wanted Bua to meet her friend. More of an angel she'd met. They had a jolly good time together. Bua instantly liked Julia the minute she met her.
The next few days had been really hectic for Khushi. Her job was no doubt very tough, but she liked it. Her boss was very nice and so was Julia's friend Lavanya. Now her friend too. She hardly had any time for herself, let alone meet Julia. Though they talked everyday over their phone.
It had been a week Julia hadn't called nor replied to Khushi's texts. Khushi was starting to get worried. 'What if she's in trouble? Devi Maiyya protect her."
After returning from a busy day at her office, she was about to ring her door bell when she saw someone sitting at some distance from their house.Alone in the dark. Strange. She never saw someone sit near her house like that before. She dared to go near. Having a closer look, she figured that the person was a woman. She couldn't see her face in the dark yet but she saw her hair. Long brown hair.
"Ex'cuse me? Whos there?"
"Khush?"
"OH MY GOD! JULES? WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? COME HERE!"
Khushi sensed something was not right the minute she heard Julia call her name in a weak faint voice, as if she had been crying for so long.
As soon as she came near, Khushi saw Julia's face was blank and pale. Her eyes were moist and red. She was trembling ... with fear?
Without wasting anymore time Khushi gathered Julia into a tight hug. She let her cry on her shoulder before finally taking her inside her house.
"Whats wrong Jules? Where have you been all this time? Is everything okay?"
Panic took over Khushi.
"My father died four days ago. My mother threw me out of my own house the very next day. She said she didn't need a good for nothing girl like me in 'HER' house anymore. I had no place to go--" Julia couldn't talk more. She couldn't stop her tears from flooding out of her eyes. She cried until she had no more tears left to shed. Khushi let her cry. She needed to get this load off her heart.
They had dinner in silence. Neither of them spoke a word. Khushi wanted to give Julia her personal space. They can talk about this shit later.
Khushi was in the kitchen washing the dishes when Julia came and hugged her.
"Thankyou so much Khush. I can't thank you enough for all your love and support!" Julia tightened her arms around Khushi.
"But I guess I should go now. Wouldn't give you more trouble. Take care!" Julia tried to smile through her tears.
Khushi held Julia's hand, her gaze hard and intent.
"And where exactly are you planning to go?" Khushi raised her eyebrow.
"Uh .. I .. um--"
"Uh, I, um? what place is that?"
"Khushi--"
"Listen Jules, you are staying with us. Get it? Whether you like this junk yard or not. Im not letting you go."
"What? but--"
"No buts. Thats final. Go take a shower. And change into my clothes. Any thing you like. Its all yours." Khushi winked at Julia.
"And if you need anything, just let me know" Shilpa bua said. Coming to stand right in front of her, Kissing her forehead with love and affection.
Julia's heart filled with warmth and love for these people standing in front of her. What had she ever done, to get such loving people as her ... family?
Yes. Her family. Two of the most important people of her life now.
After some more crying and hugging Julia finally left for shower.
Khushi tried her best to make her feel at home. Make her comfortable.
They talked about what happened with Julia. Briefly. Khushi didn't want to push Julia with questions.
Life was getting back to normal now. After few months when Khushi had enough money and Julia found a new job at La- Bernardin as Senior Manager, they decided to move to a new and better place to live. After a lot of searching they finally found an apartment with two bedrooms with attached bathrooms, one kitchen, one study room, a small store room and a balcony with the prettiest view Khushi had ever seen. Khushi and Julia both shared the rent. By the time, Shilpa bua had also joined an NGO.
Finally life was good now.
"So Khushi, you said you were looking for a job?" Julia opened a packet of chips, they just bought.
